At the dentist, digital X-ray technology is used to take pictures of the tissues and bones in a patient’s mouth. These black, white, and gray images show what’s underneath the surface to aid in the diagnosis of dental disease and other issues in the oral cavity.
Purpose of Dental X-Rays
Dental X-rays provide helpful information that we combine with a clinical examination and your child’s history to design a treatment plan for them. For example, these images can allow us to visualize incoming teeth or detect decay in hard-to-see places. When identified early, it’s easier to treat issues and prevent more serious problems down the road.
Why We May Recommend Dental X-Rays for Your Child
There is not a magic age that a patient suddenly needs dental X-rays nor a specific schedule of how often they must be taken. Whether X-rays are taken is based on a patient’s unique needs and a dentist’s clinical judgment based on their training and experience. This means that the age and frequency of when we recommend dental X-rays for your child may look different than another child, teenager, or adult.
We may recommend dental X-rays if your child has: tooth decay or gum disease; a family history of unusual dental issues; current tooth pain; loose teeth; unexplained oral bleeding, sensitivity, or swelling; abnormal growth or coloring of their teeth; or facial trauma.
Are Dental X-Rays Safe?
Digital dental X-rays are designed to limit a patient’s exposure to radiation and the risks are extremely low for everyone, including children. We take X-rays only when necessary and protect patients with shields, aprons, and minimal exposure time.
We understand you may still have questions, so please don’t hesitate to ask our team about how we use X-rays and the precautions we take!
